Why We are Librarians

January 19th, 2006 by Christopher Harris

David Warlick wrote this morning about an emotional experience that led him to finally “get” elementary education. He concludes with a powerful thought – it is these emotional experiences, not test scores, which have to guide our educational practices.

Technology is a tool. It’s a lens through which we can show that world of infinite possibilities to our children — through which they can examine, explore, and affect their world. If we continue to look at technology as a machine and education as a process that we can plug our children into in order to improve reading and math test scores, then whose shoulder are they going to rest their heads on? Whose hand are they going to hold as the walk into their future?

This reminds me that I need to finish up my final post about the third pillar of infomancy, Guide. Yes infomancy provides a Voice, and certainly it embraces the important concept of Search, but it is the act of being a Guide that makes us teachers.

    Hi Chris,

The quote from Warlick should be a universal mission statement for technology users in education. It really says it all.
