Endorsement: Sara Kelly Johns for AASL President

March 15th, 2006 by Christopher Harris

If you are a member of AASL (American Association of School Librarians)/ALA (American Library Association), then you should be receiving an e-mail with your electronic ballot sometime in the next two days. As such, I wanted to take a moment to provide an endorsement for one of the candidates for President of AASL. I have known and worked with Sara Kelly Johns for the past year, and have been very impressed with her professionalism as a librarian, her dedication to students as a teacher, and her general leet’ness as a technology user.

Sara Kelly Johns has set herself apart by taking a more active role in Living new technologies. Her blog, From the Inside Out, regularly engages readers in contemplation about the challenges we face as school librarians. When she needed to collaborate with other librarians around the country to prepare a draft resolution for the ALA Council regarding the 65% solution, Sara naturally turned to a wiki for a collaborative writing space. In my interactions with her, she has always been very supportive and eager to learn more about emerging technologies. While school libraries are not just about technology, it does play an important role in defining the future capabilities of a digitally re-shifted school library.

No matter how you are voting, I would certainly encourage you to take a small amount of time to vote in the ALA/AASL elections. There are critical issues at stake, including the ALA dues increase (that I will be supporting!).

Thanks, Chris..I really appreciate your endorsement…there IS a lot at stake right now and school librarians need to have a louder voice…and send that voice far and wide using all the technologies available. I am sincerely hoping to see more than last year;s 16% of AASL members vote this time. We have a lot to say…Sara
