MLS, here I come…

May 24th, 2005 by Christopher Harris

Oddly enough, this blog (and this post in particular) will be my first introduction to the MLS program at UB. I am entering the program from a non-typical background, and thus will not be partaking of the intro courses. Instead, my first class will be cataloging…or, as it was labeled to trick me into signing up for it as my first class in the program, Organization of Recorded Information. This class will focus on LC-based cataloging as opposed to Dewey. Even though I am now – and most likely always will be – in a school setting that is based entirely on Dewey classifications, I don’t see this as an issue. Of more importance is that both of these systems will probably be based on what to me seems to be a rather aged structure, MARC. The locating system doesn’t matter if the user can’t find the book in the OPAC to begin with because the structure is still designed around physical cards.
