“Enduring” Libraries

September 7th, 2006 by Christopher Harris

Dr. Roger Schank, with a list of credentials that would make many a nerdcore shudder (and many an academic flutter) takes a bash at libraries on the new District Adminsitration blog, The Pulse. I was quite excited to read about Will Richardson’s involvement in this blog, and eagerly headed over to subscribe. Imagine my surprise. though, when I encountered a post about libraries as “an experience to be endured.”

In the old days, when people actually went to libraries, there were card catalogues, which were created with arcane notions such as the Dewey Decimal System that helped searchers find books that had been properly catalogued. But we don’t need that stuff anymore, because we have Google. [Schank]

I wil post the same invitation here that I shared in the comments at The Pulse. Please let me know if you would like to learn more about libraries or stop by to visit some school libraries in Western NY some time. I really think we have come a ways since card catalogs.

Thanks for the link! I think many people have this image of lubraries whether we as librarians like it or not. I believe the answer lies in the services we provide and the ties we forge with our communities. It’s going to be an interesting and challenging time ahead….

*Sigh!* It would help if I could spell! Lubraries, indeed!

Lubraries are libraries said in that deep, resonating Barry White kind of voice. Better than liberries =)

It should be interesting…thanks for being part of it!
