Fish4Info – We Did It!

May 22nd, 2007 by infomancy

After a crazy week of final preparations, we launched last Friday with Release Candidate 1 of the Fish4Info portal. RC1 of this next generation school library portal includes the FISH catalog (a Free Integrated Search Handler) that has been tied in with book reviews, social bookmarking, pathfinders and electronic resources.

Thank you to the 16 member libraries that came to the rollout on Friday to get started using the portal. Despite (or maybe I should say because of?) a few technical difficulties, it was great to see so much excitement about being in on this beta test. Here’s to what can happen when we build our systems with two questions in mind: is this what’s best for the students? and why can’t we do that?

A guided tour of the site will follow shortly. I just need to catch my breath after long days and late nights of final work that went into the portal. The full public release of the system (including all of the Drupal code) will be at the New York Library Association’s October conference in Buffalo.

If, however, one of you crazy hackers would like to peek behind the scenes before then, just drop me an e-mail and I can hook you up =)
