Extend the Library: Museum Passes

August 13th, 2007 by Christopher Harris

Lifehacker had a link to an article on The Simple Dollar about ways to save money when guests are visiting. This reminded me of a previous post in library blog land (not sure where I read it first though) about libraries that provide museum passes as another resource for check out. I took this opportunity to do a bit of library marketing on The Simple Dollar to suggest this as another way libraries can help meet community educational and entertainment needs.

Does your local public library provide this type of service? A quick search on Google revealed quite a few libraries that provide museum passes. I know our local library has passes for the Rochester Memorial Art Gallery as well as the very cool JELL-O Museum. While it would be great for school libraries to share these public library opportunities with students and parents, I also wonder if a school library could provide this service as well if it weren’t available at the public library (or, if as happens in some rural areas there isn’t a public library in the district).
