Two and a half years
August 27th, 2007 by Christopher HarrisTwo and a half years later, I am once again sitting in the hall waiting for the first class session of a new semester. I braved the craziness that is the bookstore parking lot on the first evening of classes. After escaping that madhouse, I once again found a parking space not too distant from the building. And now I sit waiting.
This is one of those happy, anticipatory waitings. Tonight is storytelling, which promises to be fun! Wednesday nights will be digital information systems, which will make me finally learn the difference between an inner and outer join in a relational database (as opposed to trying both and seeing which one looks right).
It has been a good day. My wife was hired for a new position as the librarian in a one-building K-12 district. New York school districts are built around towns, so sometimes you end up with whole districts that are in the 500-600 student range. I think it will be quite exciting – a great opportunity to explore the full range of teacher-librarianship. She will be able to work with research projects and serious scholarly discussions without having to give up Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus.
I also found out today that my proposal to AASL for a presentation at ALA Annual 2008 in Anaheim was accepted! A few of us from the library system will be heading to California to talk about Fish4Info. The June presentation is perfectly timed as well, coming right after our Library Technology Reports issue on Drupal is scheduled to be published.
So I sit. Two and a half years in to what I am hoping will be an MLS program completed in under four years (though it will be close!). Looking back over my brief time in the library world (three years on Oct. 4) it is amazing to see everything that I have been able to accomplish. The real credit goes to those around me who have supported me, guided me, corrected me, taught me, and believed in some of my crazy ideas. I don’t get enough time to sit, and I certainly don’t make enough time to say thank you. So as I sit, be assured that I am thinking very positive and thankful thoughts. And until I can find the time and place to say it again in person, Thank You.

Chris, you are amazing! I am so impressed with everything you have accomplished in such a short time.
